That little coloured circle on your WhatsApp Chats screen is not decoration. It is Meta AI, a free AI assistant built into the app you already use to sell. Many Nigerian business owners tap it once, ask it a random question, and forget it.

Used properly, Meta AI on WhatsApp Business can write your status captions, draft polite replies, translate messages and suggest promo ideas, all without leaving WhatsApp. This guide shows you how to open it, 10 practical business uses, where it falls short, and what Meta can and cannot see.

In short:

  • Meta AI is a free AI assistant inside WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business. It has been available in Nigeria since April 2024.
  • Open it by tapping the coloured circle on the Chats screen, or by searching "Meta AI".
  • Use it for captions, reply drafts, translation, promo ideas and simple images.
  • Your normal chats stay private, but what you type to Meta AI may be used to improve Meta's AI. Never share customer details with it.
  • Meta is also rolling out a separate Business AI agent that can reply customers for you. Check your app's business tools to see if you have it.

What Meta AI is, in plain words

Meta AI is an AI chat assistant, meaning a program you chat with that replies in normal language. It is made by Meta, the company that owns WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram. You type or speak a request, and it answers, writes or creates an image.

Meta launched Meta AI in Nigeria and six other African countries in April 2024, in English, according to Meta's announcement. As of October 2026 it is free to use. Meta's own Meta AI on WhatsApp page notes that features may not be available to all users, so your screen may differ slightly from a friend's.

The big advantage is convenience: no extra app or login. It works in both regular WhatsApp and the WhatsApp Business app.

If you have not tried AI at all yet, our practical starter guide to AI for Nigerian small businesses explains the basics first.

How to open Meta AI on WhatsApp

  1. Update WhatsApp. Go to the Play Store or App Store and install any update. Old versions may not show Meta AI.
  2. Look for the coloured circle (blue and purple) on your Chats screen. On many phones it sits near the bottom right, just above the button for a new chat. Its position can change between app versions. Tap it.
  3. Or search for it. Tap the search bar at the top of Chats and type "Meta AI".
  4. Accept the terms the first time. Read them; they explain how your AI chats are used.
  5. Start typing. It opens like a normal chat. You can also tap the microphone to send a voice message.

In a group chat: type @Meta AI followed by your question. Everyone in the group sees the question and the answer, so think before you ask.

If you cannot find it after updating, the feature may not have reached your account yet.

10 ways to use Meta AI for your business

Each example below is a prompt, which simply means the instruction you type. Replace the parts in brackets with your details.

1. Write WhatsApp status captions

Write 3 short WhatsApp status captions for [product] at ₦[price]. Friendly, Nigerian tone. Mention delivery within [area].

2. Draft replies to common questions

A customer asks if we deliver to [area] and how much. Delivery is ₦[fee] and takes [time]. Write a warm reply under 40 words.

Save the good ones as quick replies in WhatsApp Business. A quick reply is a saved message you can send again with a short shortcut, instead of typing it each time. Our guide to using WhatsApp Business and AI to reply customers faster shows how.

3. Calm down a tense conversation

Rewrite this reply so it sounds calm and professional, not angry: [your draft reply].

Paste only your own words, not the customer's name or number.

4. Translate a message

Translate this into simple Hausa for a customer in Kano: [message]. Then give me the English meaning so I can check it.

Translations into Nigerian languages can be stiff or wrong. For anything you will post publicly, ask a native speaker to check.

5. Plan a promo

Give me 5 promo ideas for a [business type] in [city] for the end of the month, when customers have just been paid. Budget ₦[amount].

6. Rewrite a broadcast message

Make this broadcast message shorter and more exciting, under 50 words, with a clear call to order: [message].

A broadcast is one message you send to many customers at once from WhatsApp Business.

7. Create a simple image

Meta AI can create images from a description in many places. Type something like:

Imagine a bright flyer background with jollof rice, fried plantain and chicken on a table, warm colours, space at the top for text.

Add your own text in Canva, because AI images often spell words wrongly. If nothing happens, your account may not have image tools yet.

8. Write a product description for your catalogue

Write a 25-word WhatsApp catalogue description for [product], [size/colour/material], price ₦[price].

9. Explain something you do not understand

Explain in simple English what [term, e.g. "payment gateway"] means for a small shop owner in Nigeria.

For tax or legal matters, confirm with a professional or the agency.

10. Organise your staff group

In your staff group chat, type:

@Meta AI make a simple duty roster for 4 staff, Monday to Saturday, two shifts a day, so nobody works more than 5 days.

Check it fits your real needs before you share it as final.

A worked example: Bisi's phone accessories stand

Take Bisi, who sells phone cases, chargers and earpieces from a small stand at Computer Village, Ikeja, as an illustrative example.

On a slow Tuesday morning she opens Meta AI and:

  1. Asks for three status captions for new phone cases at ₦3,500 (her price).
  2. Asks it to translate one caption into Yoruba, then sends it to her cousin to check.
  3. Uses "Imagine" to create a clean background image, then adds her prices in Canva.
  4. Pastes her own rough reply about a faulty charger and asks Meta AI to make it calmer.

Fifteen minutes later her status is up and the complaint is handled, without sharing any customer's details.

What Meta AI cannot do (its limits)

  • It does not know your business. It cannot see your stock, prices or sales. Tell it the details every time, or it will guess.
  • It makes mistakes. AI can state wrong facts with confidence. Check prices, dates, fees and laws on official sites.
  • It does not reply customers for you. Meta AI helps you write. You still copy and send the reply. Automatic replies need a business AI agent or a chatbot service.
  • Local languages are mixed. It handles English well, but Pidgin, Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa can come out unnatural.
  • Images have flaws. Text inside AI images is often garbled, and food or products may look fake. Real photos of your real products build more trust.
  • Features vary. Not every user sees every feature, and Meta changes them often.

Privacy: what Meta can see

  • Your normal chats stay private. Personal WhatsApp messages are end-to-end encrypted, which means only you and the person you are chatting with can read them. Meta says it cannot read them.
  • Your Meta AI chats are different. What you type or send to Meta AI is processed by Meta and may be used to improve its AI. Treat it like talking to a stranger.
  • In a group, everyone can see what is asked of Meta AI and its answer.
  • A more private mode is arriving. In May 2026 Meta announced Incognito Chat, a mode where AI conversations are not saved and Meta says even it cannot read them. It is rolling out gradually over the coming months, Khaleej Times reported, so check whether your app has it.

Never share with Meta AI: customers' names, phone numbers, addresses, account details, BVNs or screenshots of private chats. The Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (the law on how businesses handle people's personal details) requires you to protect this information. The Nigeria Data Protection Commission enforces it. A BVN is the Bank Verification Number linked to a person's bank accounts.

Meta's business AI agent for WhatsApp Business

Separate from the Meta AI chat, Meta has built an AI agent for businesses, called Business AI or Business Agent. An AI agent is an AI that can reply to your customers on your behalf, using information you give it, such as your catalogue, prices and opening hours.

Meta announced this business agent for businesses worldwide in June 2026, for WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger, WABetaInfo reported. It is rolling out gradually, so as of October 2026 we cannot confirm that every Nigerian WhatsApp Business account has it. Check whether any charges apply before you switch it on.

To check yours:

  1. Update the WhatsApp Business app.
  2. Open Settings (or the menu) and tap Business tools.
  3. Look for a Business AI or AI agent option.

If you see it, fill in accurate business information, test it by messaging your business number from another phone, and watch every conversation for the first week. If not, quick replies and Meta AI drafts work well for most small businesses.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Pasting customer details. Remove names, numbers and addresses every single time.
  • Posting without reading. Read every caption and reply before you send it. One wrong price can cost you a sale or an argument.
  • Using AI images for real products. Customers want to see what they will actually receive.
  • Switching on a business agent and forgetting it. Check its replies daily at first.

Frequently asked questions

Is Meta AI on WhatsApp free?

Yes. As of October 2026, Meta AI is free to use inside WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business in Nigeria. You only pay for the data your phone uses.

Can I turn off Meta AI on WhatsApp?

You can simply not use it. Your regular chats stay end-to-end encrypted either way. If you do not want your AI chats kept, delete them, or use Incognito Chat when it reaches your app.

Is Meta AI better than ChatGPT?

Meta AI is more convenient because it lives inside WhatsApp. ChatGPT usually gives longer, more detailed answers and has more settings. Many owners use Meta AI for quick jobs and ChatGPT for bigger tasks. See our guide on how to use ChatGPT for your business on your phone.

Why can't I see Meta AI on my WhatsApp?

Update the app first. If it still does not show, try searching "Meta AI" in your Chats search bar. Some features reach accounts gradually, so it may appear later.
