Everybody is talking about ChatGPT, but nobody has shown you, step by step, how a busy shop owner actually uses it. You do not need a laptop, a dollar card or any tech skills. You need your phone and 15 minutes.
This guide shows you how to use ChatGPT for business from your phone: how to get it, which plan to choose (most people should start free), your first conversation, eight real business tasks with instructions you can copy, and the privacy settings to change on day one.
In short:
- Download the official ChatGPT app by OpenAI, or open chatgpt.com in your browser, and sign up with your email or Google account.
- The free plan is enough to start. The cheapest paid plan, Go, launched in Nigeria at ₦7,000 a month in October 2025. Prices change, so check before you pay.
- Talk to it like a smart assistant: tell it who you are, what you sell and what you want.
- Turn off "Improve the model for everyone" in Data Controls if you do not want your chats used for training.
- Always check prices, facts and names before you send anything ChatGPT writes.
What ChatGPT is, in plain words
ChatGPT is an AI chat assistant made by a company called OpenAI. AI (artificial intelligence) means software that can understand your words and produce new text, ideas or images. You type a request, and it replies like a well-read assistant.
Think of it as a helper who can write, plan and explain, but who has never visited your shop. It does not know your prices, customers or area unless you tell it.
If you want to compare ChatGPT with other options first, see our list of free AI tools every Nigerian small business should try.
Step 1: Get the app or open the website
You have two choices:
- The app (recommended): Open the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and search "ChatGPT". Install the one made by OpenAI. Fake apps with similar names and logos exist, and some charge you or show heavy ads.
- The website: Open your browser and go to chatgpt.com. This is handy if your phone is short of storage space.
The app is easier for daily use: you can speak instead of typing (tap the microphone) and share photos from your gallery.
Step 2: Sign up
- Open the app and tap Sign up.
- Choose to continue with your Google account, Apple account or an email address.
- If you use email, OpenAI sends a code or link to confirm it. Check your spam folder if it does not arrive.
- Enter your name and date of birth when asked.
You are now on the free plan. Use an email you check often for security notices.
Step 3: Choose a plan (free vs paid in naira terms)
ChatGPT has a free plan and several paid plans. Here is the picture as of October 2026:
| Plan | Cost | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Free | ₦0 | Most small businesses starting out |
| Go | Low monthly fee (₦7,000 at its Nigerian launch) | Regular users who keep hitting free limits |
| Plus | Higher monthly fee (set at the $20 US price) | Heavy daily users who want the strongest tools |
| Pro | Much higher | Not needed for a small business |
What the free plan gives you: everyday chat, plus limited use of the strongest model, image creation and file uploads. A model is the "brain" behind ChatGPT; stronger models give better, more careful answers. When you reach a limit, ChatGPT tells you and you can wait or carry on with a lighter version.
What paid plans cost in naira: when ChatGPT Go launched in Nigeria in October 2025 it cost ₦7,000 a month, according to TechCabal. That same month, OpenAI moved Nigerian Plus users to the same $20 price as the US, and Plus jumped from ₦9,900 to ₦31,500 a month, Techloy reported. Prices may have moved since, and your bank may add card charges. Check ChatGPT's pricing page and the checkout screen before you pay.
Ads: OpenAI now shows labelled ads on the Free and Go plans in the US, Europe and India, as TechCrunch reported. They are not confirmed for Nigeria as of October 2026. If they arrive, treat them like any advert: they are not part of ChatGPT's answer.
Our advice: stay on free for at least one month. Upgrade only if the limits slow down real work, and only if the time saved is worth more than the monthly fee.
Step 4: Have your first conversation
Tap the message box at the bottom and type. The words you type are called a prompt, which just means your instruction or question.
Here is a good first prompt. Copy it and fill in the brackets:
I run [type of business] in [area, city]. My customers are mostly [who they are]. I sell [main products] at prices from ₦[low] to ₦[high]. Remember this. Ask me three questions that will help you give me better business advice.
Answer its questions. Then ask for what you need. If the answer is too long, say "shorter". If it sounds too foreign, say "make it sound Nigerian and friendly". Keep correcting it, like you would a new shop assistant.
8 business tasks with example prompts
Replace everything in brackets with your own details. The more specific you are, the better the answer.
1. Write social media captions
Write 5 short Instagram captions for [product] at ₦[price]. My shop is in [area]. Friendly tone, one emoji each, end with "Send us a DM to order".
2. Reply a difficult customer
A customer says her order arrived late and she wants a refund. Our policy is [policy]. Write a calm, polite WhatsApp reply under 60 words that apologises and offers [solution].
Remove the customer's name and number before you paste anything.
3. Work out your profit
I buy [item] at ₦[cost] each. Transport and packaging add ₦[amount] per item. I want a 30% profit margin. What should my selling price be? Show the calculation step by step.
Your profit margin is the part of the selling price you keep after costs. Always check the maths yourself with a calculator.
4. Plan a promotion
Detty December is the busy festive season in December, when many people travel home and spend more.
Plan a 7-day "Detty December" promo for my [business] in [city] with a ₦[budget] budget. Give one idea per day and a short WhatsApp status message for each.
5. Write a price list or menu
Turn this into a neat price list for WhatsApp, grouped by category, with prices aligned: [paste your rough list].
6. Translate or switch tone
Rewrite this message in simple Nigerian Pidgin, then in plain English, for customers who prefer either: [message].
ChatGPT's Pidgin, Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa are improving but not perfect, so ask a native speaker to check before you post.
7. Draft an invoice or receipt layout
Create a simple invoice layout for my business, [business name], with spaces for customer name, items, quantity, unit price, total, bank details and payment due date.
An invoice is the bill you send a customer asking them to pay. Paste the layout into Google Docs or Canva.
8. Understand a document or rule
Explain this in simple English for a small shop owner. What do I need to do, and by when? [paste text with personal details removed]
Use it for supplier terms or a new tax notice. For legal and tax decisions, confirm with an accountant or the agency.

A worked example: Kemi's bakery in Ibadan
Take Kemi, who runs a small cake and small chops business in Bodija, Ibadan, as an illustrative example.
On Monday morning she opens ChatGPT and sends her first prompt describing her business. Then she:
- Asks for a price list layout for her cakes (₦25,000 to ₦80,000, her own prices) and pastes it into her WhatsApp catalogue.
- Asks for five captions for a new red velvet cake.
- Uses the profit prompt to check whether her small chops tray at ₦15,000 still makes money after flour and oil went up.
She checks every number, rewrites two captions that sound too foreign, and posts. Twenty minutes, done.
Save and reuse your chats
Every conversation is saved in the side menu (tap the two lines at the top left). To stay organised:
- Rename chats with clear names like "Captions" or "Customer replies". Hold down a chat to rename or delete it.
- Keep one chat per job. Return to your "Captions" chat each week so ChatGPT keeps the context of your products.
- Use projects if your app shows them. A project is a folder that groups related chats and files.
- Add custom instructions. In Settings, under "Personalization", you can tell ChatGPT about your business once, so every new chat starts with that knowledge.
- Save your best prompts in WhatsApp's "Message yourself" chat or your phone notes, ready to paste.
Data-saving tips
Typed chats use very little data and are fine on a small bundle. Voice conversations, photo uploads and image creation use much more. Do those on Wi-Fi or a night plan, compress big photos before uploading, and close the app when you are done.
Privacy settings to change on day one
By default, OpenAI may use your conversations to train its models, meaning to teach the AI and make it better. To stop this:
- Tap the menu, then your name or profile.
- Open Settings, then Data Controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
After this, OpenAI says new chats will not be used for training, though they still appear in your history. See OpenAI's Data Controls FAQ for details.
For extra privacy, use Temporary Chat (look for the icon at the top of a new chat). These chats do not show in your history, and OpenAI says it deletes them from its systems within 30 days, according to its chat retention policy.
Even with these settings on, never paste customers' phone numbers, addresses, BVNs, account details or private chats. The Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (the law on how businesses handle people's personal details) requires you to protect that information, and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission enforces it. A BVN is a customer's Bank Verification Number, the 11-digit number linked to all their bank accounts.
How to check ChatGPT's answers
ChatGPT sometimes gives wrong answers that sound very confident. Before you use anything:
- Numbers: redo the maths on your calculator.
- Prices and fees: never trust a government fee or bank charge from ChatGPT. Check the official website.
- Facts and laws: ask "What is your source?" and then open that source yourself. If it cannot give one, treat the answer as a guess.
Mistakes to avoid
- Vague prompts. "Write a caption" gives a weak result. Include product, price, area and tone.
- Accepting the first answer. Ask for changes. The second or third version is usually better.
- Paying for Plus on day one. Use the free plan until its limits truly slow you down.
Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT free to use in Nigeria?
Yes. The free plan works in Nigeria with an email or Google account and no card. It has limits on the strongest model, images and uploads, and paid plans remove some of them.
Can ChatGPT reply my WhatsApp customers automatically?
Not on its own. ChatGPT writes the replies, and you copy them into WhatsApp. Automatic replies need a separate chatbot service. Our guide to using WhatsApp Business and AI to reply customers faster shows a simpler middle path.
How do I pay for ChatGPT Plus from Nigeria?
Upgrade inside the app or on the website and pay with a card that allows international payments. Check your bank's international spending limit and charges first, since the Plus price follows the dollar.
