It is 11pm. Three customers have asked "how much?" on WhatsApp, two want to know if you deliver to Lekki, and one Instagram DM has been waiting since morning. You are tired, and some of those buyers will go to the next seller by tomorrow.
An AI chatbot can help. It is a program that replies to customer messages automatically, a bit like a shop assistant who never sleeps. This guide compares the AI chatbot options in Nigeria for small businesses, from free WhatsApp tools to paid platforms, with costs as of October 2026, setup steps and what to watch out for.
In short:
- Most small businesses should start with the free WhatsApp Business app tools: greeting, away messages, quick replies and a catalogue.
- Paid chatbots on the WhatsApp Business Platform make sense when you get many chats a day or need replies around the clock.
- Since 1 October 2026, Meta (the company that owns WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook) charges for replies on the Platform after 1,000 free ones a month per number. Charges are in US dollars, so naira costs move with the exchange rate.
- Every chatbot needs a clear way to hand customers to a real person, and must protect customer data.
What an AI chatbot actually is
There are two kinds of chatbot, and the difference matters for your money.
A rule-based chatbot follows a fixed script. The customer taps "1 for price list, 2 for delivery", and the bot sends a saved answer. It is cheap and predictable, but it cannot handle questions outside its menu.
An AI chatbot uses artificial intelligence (AI), computer programs that understand and write human-like text. It reads the customer's message in their own words, then writes a reply using the information you gave it, such as your price list, delivery areas and opening hours. It handles more questions, but it can also get things wrong, so you must check its answers.
If you are new to AI tools generally, our practical starter guide to AI for small businesses covers the basics.
Do you need a chatbot?
Many small businesses do not, at least not yet. Use this simple test.
You probably need one if:
- You get more chats than you can answer within an hour, most days.
- Most messages ask the same few questions: price, availability, delivery, location.
- Customers message at night or on Sundays when nobody is available.
- You run ads that bring a sudden flood of messages.
You probably do not need one yet if:
- You get fewer than 30 to 50 chats a day and can reply within a few hours.
- Most of your sales need a personal touch, like custom tailoring or catering quotes.
- You have not yet set up the free tools in WhatsApp Business.
Free tools and good habits often solve the problem first. Our guide to using WhatsApp Business and AI to reply customers faster shows how.
Your AI chatbot options in Nigeria compared
| Option | What it does | Cost (as of October 2026) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp Business app tools | Greeting and away messages, quick replies, catalogue | Free | Almost every small business |
| Meta's business AI agent in WhatsApp Business | AI answers common questions from your business info | Check in the app before you switch it on | Shops that see it in their app and want to test AI replies |
| WhatsApp Business Platform with a provider | Full chatbot, menus, AI replies, many staff on one number | Provider fee plus Meta's per-message charges in US dollars | Busy businesses with high chat volume |
| Website chat widget | Chat box on your website, sometimes with AI | Free basic plans exist; AI add-ons usually paid | Businesses that get website traffic |
| Instagram DM automation | Instant replies, FAQs, keyword replies | Basic tools free in Meta Business Suite; extra tools paid | Sellers who get most orders on Instagram |
Let us look at each.
Option 1: WhatsApp Business app tools (free)
The free WhatsApp Business app is not a chatbot, but it covers the basics. It can send a greeting message to new customers and an away message when you are closed. Quick replies let you send saved answers by typing a shortcut like /price.
It costs nothing except your data. For many shops, salons and food vendors, this is enough.
Option 2: Meta's business AI agent in WhatsApp Business
Meta announced its Business AI agent for businesses worldwide in June 2026, as WABetaInfo reported. An AI agent is an AI that replies to customers for you. It uses your catalogue and business information, and it appears under business tools in the WhatsApp Business app. It is rolling out gradually, so as of October 2026 not every Nigerian account may have it yet. Our guide to using Meta AI on WhatsApp for your business explains how to look for it.
Our advice: if you see it, test it from a friend's phone. Ask tricky questions about price and delivery. Only switch it on for real customers when the answers are right, and check the costs shown in the app first.
Option 3: WhatsApp Business Platform with a provider
The WhatsApp Business Platform, often called the WhatsApp API, is the paid version for bigger operations. An API is a connection that lets one piece of software talk to another. Here, it connects your WhatsApp number to chatbot software. You usually sign up through a provider, a company that sets it up and gives you a dashboard (a screen where you see and answer all your chats).
How Meta charges: Meta charges per message on the Platform. Rates depend on the message type and the customer's country. The main types are:
- Marketing messages: promos and offers.
- Utility messages: order updates, receipts and delivery alerts.
- Authentication messages: one-time codes (OTPs) for logging in.
- Service messages: replies to customers who messaged you first.
The first three types are sent as templates, message formats that Meta approves before you can use them. Customers who message you pay nothing.
The big change came on 1 October 2026. Meta started charging for service messages and for utility templates sent while a customer chat is open. Each business phone number still gets the first 1,000 service messages free every month, according to Trengo's summary of the October 2026 changes. Trengo notes the rule applies to every provider, and it covers both automated replies and replies typed by staff.
What it costs in naira: Meta prices Nigeria in US dollars. Nigerian outlets reported that a chargeable utility or service message to a Nigerian number was expected to cost about $0.0101 (around ₦14 at ₦1,340 to the dollar), and a marketing message about $0.062 (around ₦84), as Sahara Reporters explained. The naira figure moves with the exchange rate. The fact-checking site Dubawa also clarified that this applies to businesses on the Platform, not ordinary users or the free WhatsApp Business app. Check the current rates on Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform pricing page before you budget.
Provider fees: On top of Meta's charges, the provider charges a monthly subscription. Some charge in naira, others in dollars by card. Nigerian and African providers that offer WhatsApp messaging include Termii, KudiSMS and eBanqo, alongside international ones such as Wati and AiSensy. We have not tested these services, and listing them is not a recommendation. Prices and features change often, so ask each one for a written naira quote that shows:
- The monthly subscription
- Whether AI replies are included or cost extra
- Whether they add a markup (an extra amount on top) to Meta's message charges
- Setup fees and minimum contract length
Option 4: Website chat widgets
A chat widget is the small chat bubble in the corner of a website. Visitors type questions and you, or a bot, reply.
tawk.to is a popular choice because its basic live chat (you reply in person from your phone or laptop) is free. Its AI add-on, AI Assist, has a free plan for sites with few chats. Paid AI plans start from $29 a month as of October 2026, according to tawk.to's pricing page. Other website chat tools work in a similar way: a free or cheap basic plan, with AI replies costing more.
A website chatbot only helps if people actually visit your website. If most customers find you on WhatsApp and Instagram, start there.
Option 5: Instagram DM automation
A DM is a direct message, a private chat on Instagram. Automation means replies that send by themselves. Instagram professional accounts can use free automation in Meta Business Suite, Meta's free dashboard for managing Facebook and Instagram. You can set up:
- Instant replies to the first message from a new customer
- Away messages for when you are closed
- Frequently asked questions that customers tap to get a saved answer
For more, such as sending a DM to everyone who comments "PRICE" on a post, sellers often use tools like ManyChat. Its paid plans are charged in US dollars and the price rises as your number of contacts grows. Check ManyChat's pricing page for the current naira cost on your card before you sign up.
Worked example: Bisi's hair business in Ibadan
Take Bisi, who sells wigs and hair extensions from Bodija, Ibadan, as an illustrative example. She gets around 40 WhatsApp chats a day and 20 Instagram DMs. Most ask about price, length and delivery.
Step 1 (free): She sets up a WhatsApp catalogue with prices and lengths, a greeting message that points to the catalogue, and quick replies for delivery fees.
Step 2 (free): On Instagram, she adds FAQs in Meta Business Suite: "Price list", "Delivery", "Where are you?"
Step 3 (review): After a month, she checks her chats. Night-time messages are still missed, and she loses sales on weekends. She sees Meta's business AI in her app and tests it with a friend for one week before switching it on.
Result: She has not paid for a Platform provider. If her chats grow to hundreds a day, that will be the time to get quotes. Beauty businesses can find more ideas in our guide to AI for salons and barbers.
How to set up a chatbot, step by step
Step 1: Write down your top 10 questions
Scroll through a week of chats. List the 10 questions you answer most, and your best answer to each.
Step 2: Prepare your business facts
The bot is only as good as the information you give it. Write a single document with prices, delivery areas and fees, opening hours, payment details, return policy and location with a landmark. If you need help with the wording, our 20 ready-to-use AI prompts for Nigerian business owners include prompts for this.
Step 3: Pick the simplest option that solves your problem
Start free. Move to paid only when the free tools clearly are not enough.
Step 4: Test before customers see it
Ask friends to message the bot with real and tricky questions, including in Pidgin. Fix any wrong answers.
Step 5: Set up a handover to a human
This is the most important step. Make sure the bot hands over to a real person when:
- The customer asks for a person, for example by typing "agent" or "human"
- The question is about a complaint, refund or payment problem
- The bot does not know the answer
Tell customers when they will hear back, for example: "A member of our team will reply by 9am tomorrow."
Step 6: Check it every week
Read a sample of the bot's conversations each week. Update prices and answers whenever anything changes.
Keep customer data safe
A chatbot reads and stores customer names, numbers and messages. That is personal data, and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 sets rules on how you handle it. Our guide on AI and customer data under the NDPA explains them in plain words.
Before you sign up with any provider, ask:
- Where is customer data stored, and who can see it?
- Can I download or delete it if I leave?
- Is customer data used to train their AI?
Never let the bot ask for card PINs, OTPs (one-time passwords sent by SMS), passwords or BVNs (Bank Verification Numbers). Tell customers clearly that they are chatting with an automated assistant.
Mistakes to avoid
- Paying for a chatbot before using the free tools. Many businesses fix slow replies with a catalogue and quick replies alone.
- No way to reach a human. Customers who feel trapped by a bot leave, and some leave angry reviews.
- Old information. A bot that quotes last month's price causes arguments.
- Ignoring the dollar exchange rate. Platform message charges are in dollars, so budget for the naira cost rising.
- Spamming broadcasts. Marketing messages cost the most and annoy customers who did not ask for them.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an AI chatbot cost in Nigeria?
It ranges from free (WhatsApp Business app tools and Instagram's basic automation) to a monthly provider subscription plus Meta's per-message charges on the Platform. Your total depends on the provider, how many chats you get and the exchange rate. Get a written naira quote before you commit.
Will WhatsApp charge me for using the WhatsApp Business app?
No. As of October 2026, the free WhatsApp Business app on your phone does not charge per message. The October 2026 charges apply to businesses using the WhatsApp Business Platform (API). The fact-checkers at Dubawa confirmed this in August 2026.
Can a chatbot reply in Pidgin, Yoruba, Igbo or Hausa?
AI chatbots can often understand and reply in Pidgin, and some handle Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa, but the quality varies. Test it with real customer messages first, and keep a human available.
Is a chatbot better than hiring a customer care staff member?
Not always. A chatbot handles repeat questions and night-time messages well. A person is better at complaints, negotiations and building loyalty. Many businesses use both.
