You need a flyer for Saturday's promo, and the graphic designer you know is booked until next week. Meanwhile your competitor posts a fresh, clean flyer on WhatsApp status every week.

You can design a flyer with AI on your phone, for free, in under an hour. This guide shows you how with Canva and a few other free tools. It also covers the words, the right sizes, printing in Nigeria, and the AI mistakes that make customers laugh instead of buy.

Here, AI (artificial intelligence) means software that can write text or create pictures when you type an instruction. That instruction is called a prompt.

In short:

  • Canva's free plan is the easiest place to start, with ready-made designs and a limited number of AI uses.
  • Write the flyer words with a chat assistant like ChatGPT or Meta AI, then check every price and phone number yourself.
  • Every flyer needs four things readable in two seconds: the offer, the price, the location and a phone number.
  • Use 1080 x 1920 pixels for WhatsApp status, 1080 x 1350 for Instagram posts, and A5 or A4 for print.
  • Never let AI write words inside a picture, and never pass off AI images as your real product.

How to design a flyer with AI in Canva, step by step

Canva is a free design app with thousands of templates, which are finished designs you edit with your own words and pictures. As of October 2026, the free plan lets you use its AI tools a limited number of times, and paid plans get much more. Canva changes these limits often, so check Canva's pricing page for the current allowance.

Before you start, gather your real details (offer, prices, address, WhatsApp number) and two or three photos of your product taken in daylight. Design apps load many pictures, so use Wi-Fi or a night bundle if you can.

Step 1: Install Canva and sign up

Download Canva from the Play Store or App Store, and check the developer is "Canva". Sign up with Google or email. No bank card is needed for the free plan.

Step 2: Pick the size first

Tap Create (the plus button) and search for your size, such as "Instagram Post (Portrait)", "Your Story" or "Flyer (A5)". Choosing the size first saves you from stretching your design later.

Step 3: Start from a template, or ask the AI

  • Template: search "food promo", "salon price list" or "sale flyer". Pick one with a simple layout. Free templates have no crown or "Pro" badge.
  • AI design: use Canva's AI design box (look for "Magic Design" or "Canva AI"). Type something like: "Bright promo flyer for a provisions shop in Enugu, 20% off beverages this weekend, yellow and green colours, space for a product photo." Pick the closest layout and edit it.

AI uses count against your free allowance and templates do not. Use templates for everyday flyers and save AI for when you are stuck.

Step 4: Add your own photos

Tap Uploads, upload your photos, and drag one onto the template's picture frame. A real photo of your own jollof, shoes or shop front builds more trust than any stock picture. Canva's background remover (the tool that cuts your product out of a messy background) is a Pro, meaning paid, feature as of October 2026. The free tools further down can help.

Step 5: Replace the words and download

Type your real words into each text box. Zoom out to see the flyer at phone size. Then tap Share, then Download. Choose PNG, a normal picture file, for WhatsApp and Instagram. Choose PDF Print, a sharp document file, for a printer.

How to write the flyer text with AI

Most bad flyers have too many words. A chat assistant like ChatGPT, Gemini or Meta AI is good at cutting your message down. Our step-by-step guide to using ChatGPT for your business shows how to set one up on your phone.

Copy this prompt and fill in the brackets:

"Write the text for a promo flyer. Business: [Mama Ada's Kitchen, Wuse 2, Abuja]. Offer: [jollof rice, chicken and drink for ₦4,500, Friday to Sunday only]. Audience: [office workers nearby]. Give me a headline of 6 words or less, one line under it of 10 words or less, and a call to action. Give 3 options. Simple Nigerian English."

A call to action is the line that tells people what to do next, such as "Order on WhatsApp: 0803 000 0000".

Pick the best option and check every number yourself. AI tools sometimes change a price or invent a discount. For more prompts, see our ready-to-use AI prompts for Nigerian business owners, or ask the same thing inside WhatsApp using our guide to Meta AI on WhatsApp for your business.

Design rules for a flyer people can actually read

People look at a WhatsApp status for about as long as it takes to tap past it. Your flyer must work in two seconds.

  1. One offer per flyer. Three offers means three flyers.
  2. The four must-haves: the offer, the price in naira, where you are (area plus a landmark, like "opposite Shoprite, Lekki"), and a phone or WhatsApp number.
  3. Big headline, few words. If you cannot read it at arm's length on your phone, it is too small.
  4. Strong contrast. Contrast means a big difference between text colour and background. Dark on light, or white on dark. Avoid yellow on white or red on green.
  5. Two fonts at most. One bold font for the headline, one plain font for details. Curly fonts make prices hard to read.
  6. Leave empty space. A crowded flyer looks cheap.
  7. Write prices clearly. "₦4,500" beats "4.5k".

Flyer sizes for WhatsApp status, Instagram and print

Screen sizes are measured in pixels (the tiny dots that make up a picture). Paper is measured in millimetres.

Where it goesSizeShape
WhatsApp status, Instagram or Facebook story1080 x 1920 pixelsTall (9:16)
Instagram feed post1080 x 1350 pixelsPortrait (4:5)
Square post, WhatsApp chats1080 x 1080 pixelsSquare (1:1)
HandbillA5 (148 x 210 mm)Portrait
Shop window posterA4 (210 x 297 mm) or A3Portrait

On tall designs, keep text away from the very top and bottom, where app buttons and your profile name sit. Instagram's profile grid now shows posts as tall rectangles that cut off a little of the edges, so keep the important part in the middle. Instagram's help centre has the latest rules on photo sizes.

Other free AI tools for flyers

Each of these has a free plan with limits that change often. Treat them as backups when your Canva allowance runs out.

ToolGood forFree plan as of October 2026
Adobe ExpressTemplates, background removal, text effectsSmall monthly allowance of AI "generative credits"
Microsoft DesignerA design or picture from one sentenceLimited AI credits; Microsoft 365 subscribers get more
Meta AI (WhatsApp, Instagram)Quick background images and ideasFree, features vary by user
ChatGPT and GeminiFlyer text, and some image creationFree plans with daily caps

A credit works like airtime: each AI picture uses some, and when they finish you wait for next month or pay. For a wider list, see our guide to free AI tools every Nigerian small business should try.

A worked example: Chika's weekend promo

Take Chika, who runs a small provisions shop in Enugu, as an illustrative example.

  1. She asks ChatGPT for three headlines and picks "Weekend Beverage Sale", with the line "Milo, Peak and Bournvita at old prices".
  2. In Canva she creates an "Instagram Post (Portrait)" from a free green and yellow grocery template.
  3. She uploads photos of her own shelf, taken that morning by the shop door.
  4. She types her real prices, her street and nearest landmark, and her WhatsApp number in large white text on a dark green bar.
  5. She downloads a PNG for her status, then makes a "Your Story" version by copying the elements into a new tall design.
  6. On Saturday, she prints A5 copies at a business centre to hand out at the junction.

Software cost: zero. Time: about 45 minutes the first time, less each week after.

Printing your flyer in Nigeria

Phone screens show colour differently from paper, so a little care saves you from paying for copies you cannot use.

  • Download as "PDF Print", not PNG, for sharp text.
  • Ask about bleed. Bleed is a small extra edge (usually 3 mm) that the printer cuts off, so no white line shows at the border. In Canva, turn on "Show print bleed" and stretch your background to the outer line.
  • Keep text at least 5 mm from the edges so the cutter does not chop your phone number.
  • Print one test copy first. Bright screen colours often come out darker on paper.
  • Ask about paper weight. Thickness is measured in gsm (grams per square metre). Thin paper suits handbills you share by the hundred; thicker, glossy paper suits menus that must last.
  • Compare quotes. Printing prices vary by city, quantity, paper and one side or two. Get quotes from at least two printers for your exact order before you pay.

Copyright is the legal right of whoever made a photo, drawing or design to control how it is used. In Nigeria it falls under the Copyright Act 2022, enforced by the Nigerian Copyright Commission.

  • Do not copy pictures from Google or other people's Instagram. Use your own photos or Canva's built-in library.
  • Do not use a celebrity's face or another company's logo. It suggests they endorse you.
  • Never let AI put words inside a picture. Letters come out scrambled, like "Jolof Rce" or "Speical Ofer". Create the image without text, then type your words on top in Canva.
  • Watch for fake-looking people. Extra fingers, odd teeth and plastic skin are common in AI images, and customers notice.
  • Never show AI images as your real product. An AI cake that looks better than what you deliver will bring complaints. Use AI pictures for backgrounds and decoration only.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Too much text. If it needs reading glasses, cut it in half.
  • A wrong or missing phone number. Check it twice.
  • Pro elements in a free design. Anything with a crown badge asks you to pay or adds a watermark. Swap it for a free one.
  • Dark, blurry photos. Retake them in daylight.
  • Skipping the final read. Read every word aloud once before posting.

Frequently asked questions

Is Canva free to use in Nigeria?

Yes. The free plan works in Nigeria and includes many templates, a large photo library and a limited number of AI uses. Some elements and features need the paid Pro plan, and Canva marks those with a badge.

Can AI design a full flyer for me?

It can give you a good first draft in seconds, but you must still edit it. Put in your own photos, real prices and correct number, because the AI does not know your business or your area.

What size should a WhatsApp status flyer be?

Use 1080 x 1920 pixels, a tall shape that fills the phone screen. In Canva, search "Your Story" to get this size.

Why does the text in my AI image look scrambled?

Image AI tools are still weak at spelling words inside pictures. Create the image without words, then add your text with Canva's text tool.

Words to know

  • Prompt: the instruction you type into an AI tool.
  • Template: a ready-made design you edit with your own words and photos.
  • Contrast: the difference between text colour and background colour.
  • Bleed: a small extra border on a print design that the printer cuts off.
