Google Business Profile Nigeria: Free Setup and Verification

Set up a Google Business Profile in Nigeria for free: create and verify it, add hours and photos, get honest reviews, use AI and avoid suspension.

When someone in Gwarinpa types "pharmacy near me" into Google, a map pops up with three businesses at the top. Those businesses get the calls, the direction requests and the walk-in customers. If you are not on that map, you are invisible to people ready to buy today.

A Google Business Profile is the free listing that puts your business on Google Maps and in Google Search. This guide shows you how to set up a Google Business Profile in Nigeria, how verification works as of October 2026, what to fill in, how to handle reviews, how AI can help, and what gets profiles suspended.

In short:

  • A Google Business Profile is free and shows your shop on Maps and Search with your number, hours, photos and reviews.
  • Create it at business.google.com, then verify it. Google decides which verification methods you get; video is now common.
  • Use your real business name and address. Extra keywords in the name can get you suspended.
  • Ask every customer for a review, never pay for reviews, and reply to all of them.

What a Google Business Profile is and why it brings walk-ins

Think of it as your shop's signboard on the internet. It shows your name, category, address pin, phone number, opening hours, photos and customer reviews. A customer can tap Call, tap Directions to find you, or read reviews to decide whether to trust you.

Google says local results depend mainly on three things. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance is how close you are to the searcher. Prominence is how well known you are, including how many reviews you have. See Google's page about local ranking. Google also says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking.

This listing is one of the free channels in our pillar guide on how to market a small business in Nigeria without a big budget.

Who qualifies

You qualify if you meet customers face to face:

  • Storefront business: customers come to you at a place with a permanent signboard and staff during opening hours, like a barbing salon in Ikeja or a buka (local restaurant) in Surulere.
  • Service-area business: you go to customers, like a plumber, mobile hairdresser or caterer. You hide your home address and show only the areas you serve, up to 20 areas. Google's sign-up guide explains both choices, and its video verification guide says not to add your address if you do not serve customers there.

A business that only sells online, with no face-to-face contact, is generally not eligible.

How to set up a Google Business Profile in Nigeria, step by step

You need a Gmail account, your phone and about 20 minutes. It is free, so nobody needs to charge you to "put you on Google Maps".

Step 1: Start or claim your profile

Open business.google.com and sign in. Type your business name and check the suggestions first. If your business already appears on Maps, claim it instead of creating a duplicate (a second copy of the same business). If Google says someone else already manages it, you can request ownership.

Step 2: Enter your real business name

Type the name on your signboard, receipts and CAC certificate: "Mama Tolu's Kitchen", not "Mama Tolu's Kitchen Best Jollof Surulere". Google's guidelines for representing your business say your name must match the real-world name customers know. Extra words in the name are a common reason for suspension. If you have not registered the name, see our guide on how to register a business name with CAC.

Step 3: Choose your category

The category tells Google what you do, for example "Hair salon", "Pharmacy" or "Tailor". Pick the most specific main category. Add extra categories only for things you really offer.

Step 4: Add your location or service area

For a storefront, enter your address and drag the pin to the exact spot. Nigerian addresses often confuse Google, so check the pin carefully. For a service-area business, say customers do not visit you, then list areas such as "Lekki, Ajah and Victoria Island".

Use a number someone answers during business hours. No website? You can add your WhatsApp click-to-chat link instead. That is a link in the form wa.me/234XXXXXXXXXX that opens a WhatsApp chat with you. Test it.

Step 6: Verify your business

Verification is how Google confirms you really manage the business. Google says customers can only find your profile after you complete it.

Google picks the methods you are offered, and you cannot choose. As of October 2026 they may include a video recording, a code by phone, SMS or email, a live video call with Google support, or a postcard. Which ones you see depends on your business and location.

Many small businesses are asked for a video. Google's video verification guide says it must be recorded live inside the Business Profile on your phone, in one unbroken take of at least 30 seconds, with no editing. Tips:

  1. Record in daylight on a stable network. Switching between Wi-Fi and data can break the upload.
  2. Start outside: your signboard, the street and a nearby landmark. The name on your signboard must match the name on your profile.
  3. Walk inside without stopping and show your products or equipment.
  4. Show proof you manage the place: opening the door or a store room with your keys, or using your POS.
  5. Do not show other people's faces, bank details, tax numbers or ID numbers. Google says these must not appear in the video.

Google says video review can take up to 5 business days. Do not keep editing your details while you wait.

Fill in your profile completely

  • Hours: set real hours, plus special hours for Christmas, Sallah and other public holidays.
  • Description: up to 750 characters (letters, spaces and punctuation). Say what you sell, who you serve, where you are and what makes you different. No links or promotions.
  • Photos: your signboard and shopfront (so people recognise you), the inside of the shop, your best products and your team at work. Real daylight photos only.
  • Products and services: main items with naira prices where you can, for example "Wash and set: from ₦5,000". Check prices monthly.
  • Posts: short updates about new stock, offers or events. One a week keeps the profile looking alive. Our guide to designing flyers with free AI tools helps with the images.

How to get Google reviews politely

Ask every customer, at a natural moment: when they collect a finished dress or receive a delivery. Say: "We're glad you liked it. Would you mind leaving us a review on Google? It really helps small businesses like ours."

Google lets you create a review link and a QR code (a square barcode a phone camera scans) from your profile; see Google's review link and QR code guide. As of October 2026, Google says the QR code can only be made on a computer browser, not on a phone, so use a laptop or a business centre. Send the link on WhatsApp after a sale and print the QR code at your counter.

Google's rules on fake engagement are strict. Never:

  • Pay for reviews or give discounts or free items in exchange
  • Ask only happy customers while avoiding unhappy ones, or ask staff to bring in a set number of reviews
  • Get friends who never bought from you to post reviews
  • Offer anything to remove or change a bad review

Google can remove reviews, block new ones or show a warning on your profile.

How to reply to reviews

Reply to every review. For a good one, thank the customer by name and invite them back. For a bad one, stay calm, apologise, say what you will fix and invite them to contact you. Never insult a customer or share their details.

Good afternoon Mr Okafor, we're sorry your order arrived late on Saturday. That is not the service we want for you. We have changed our delivery times. Please call us on [number] so we can make it right.

Use AI to write your description and review replies

AI chat tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Meta AI can draft this text in seconds. You type an instruction, called a prompt, then edit the answer. Our guide on how to use ChatGPT for your business on your phone shows you how to start.

Write a Google Business Profile description for [name], a [type of business] in [area, city]. We sell [products]. What makes us different: [2 or 3 things]. Landmark: [landmark]. Under 700 characters, simple Nigerian English, no prices, no links, no exaggeration.

Write a short, polite reply to this Google review for my [type of business]. Thank the customer and invite them back. Under 50 words. Review: "[paste review]"

Always edit before posting, because AI can invent facts. Never paste a customer's phone number or private details into an AI tool. For more ideas, see our 20 ready-to-use AI prompts for Nigerian business owners.

Common reasons profiles get suspended

A suspension means Google hides your profile or locks you out of editing. Google rarely gives the exact reason, but most cases break one of its guidelines for representing your business. The usual causes:

  • Keywords stuffed into the business name
  • A virtual office (an address you rent only to receive mail, but do not work from), a shared co-working desk without your own signboard, or a PO box
  • Showing a home address when customers do not visit you
  • Duplicate profiles for the same business
  • Fake, paid or staff reviews
  • Details that do not match your signboard or documents
  • Many edits to the name or address in a short time

To recover, fix the problem first. Then send an appeal (a formal request to restore your profile) through Google's suspended profile help page. Google lists useful proof such as your business registration, a business licence, tax certificates and utility bills, with the name and address matching your profile. Do not create a new profile while the appeal is being reviewed.

Worked example: Kemi's salon in Ibadan

Take Kemi, who runs a small hair salon in Bodija, Ibadan, as an illustrative example. She created a profile named "Kemi's Hair Studio", exactly as on her signboard, under "Hair salon". Google asked for a video, so she recorded one clip of about a minute: signboard, street, the salon inside, and her opening the product cabinet with her keys.

After verification, she added her hours, 15 daylight photos and a service list with starting prices. She made the review QR code on a laptop, printed it on a card at her mirror, asked every client, and replied to every review within a day. She also asks new clients how they found her and writes it down, so she can see whether Google Maps is bringing people in.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Letting an agent own your profile. Use a business Gmail you control and keep the password safe.
  • Leaving hours outdated. Wrong hours mean wasted trips and angry reviews.
  • Ignoring reviews. An unanswered complaint looks like you do not care.
  • Creating a new profile when you move. Update the address on the existing one and expect to verify again.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Business Profile free in Nigeria?

Yes. Creating, verifying and managing it is free. You only spend money if you choose to run Google adverts, which are separate.

How long does verification take?

It depends on the method Google offers. Phone, SMS and email codes can be quick. Google says video reviews can take up to 5 business days, so check the status in your profile instead of resubmitting.

Can I create a profile without a shop?

Yes, if you serve customers in person at their location. Set it up as a service-area business and hide your home address. Online-only businesses are generally not eligible.

Why is my business not showing on Google Maps?

Usually you are not yet verified, your profile is incomplete, your category is wrong, or the profile was suspended. Check your profile dashboard for messages from Google.
